Yes, you read that right. I got my very first tattoo yesterday!
It was 6 hours of black and grey line drawings – color will come later. Here’s a pic of it last night before the saran wrap came off. It goes from my left shoulder down to about a quarter-inch above my butt crack – the part covered up by the black pads is Tibetan-style clouds. (Comment from Gye while I was writing the post: “Are you really going to say “butt crack”?” Me: “……how else would you refer to it? The crack of my ass? Butt cleavage?”) The artist hand-drew the clouds and has already shaded them somewhat, some of which was to cover up bobbled lines caused by involuntary movements on my part. I thought I was holding still but apparently not – although once he got done with my butt it was a lot easier to relax and not move.
The artist is John Fitzgerald at Slave to the Needle in Seattle. I picked him based on his portfolio and the fact that he was one of the only artists at the site taking appointments back in July when I set this up. (The shop is super busy – most of the artists are booked 7 weeks out for consults and 12 weeks after that for tattoos, but there’s a good reason for that because all the artists do amazing work.) Anyway, it turns out that John’s favorite art style is Tibetan, which fits perfectly with what I’m getting done. It’s a great shop with fun people which made the whole thing a lot easier to sit through.
I managed to go the entire session with my dignity intact. As in, I didn’t say “ow” even once. And yes, it hurt a lot. Questions?
